Ethiopia, Mystical or Fearful?

This is a copy of my travel diary for my short little more than two week trip around Ethiopia in 2004, pretty much before the internet and any type of mobile communications had a reach outside of the richest parts of Addis Ababa. I’d always wanted to visit here since my local Ethiopian restaurant in Kentish Town London, Lalibela, had waxed lyrical about what there was to see and do there. It was going to be difficult, but it wouldn’t disappoint right?

Dedication

Dedicated to all those people in Ethiopia, even the ones who tried to rob me and steal from me, I have met whose lives are infinitely harder and more challenging than my own.

Why?

I set myself a pledge in December 2001 that I would visit 50 countries by the time I was 30….. After going around the world in 2001 I was on 33 countries so had a mad dash of 17 more countries to make in a mere 2 years and 4 months. I’d made to numbers up with a trek through eastern and northern Europe in 2002 (6 countries), more of Europe in 2003 plus Japan and Central America (8 countries) and spending the winter of early 2004 in Scandinavia (2 countries). And this is where I find myself now, the 17th and 50th I’ve always wanted to visit here since my local Ethiopian restaurant in Kentish Town London, Lalibela had waxed lyrical about what there was to see there. Would it disappoint?
